meant by "more effective." This unqualified assertion is likely to confuse the many people who already use or recommend All-Bran as an "effective" means of avoiding constipation whatever its soluble:insoluble fibre ratio or influence on plasma lipids, mineral absorption, faecal bulking, bowel transit time, etc. Furthermore, it is difficult to see why "wholemeal bread and crispbreads" are the only items to be recommended for a weight reducing diet from a list which includes acceptable alternatives such as granary bread, Hovis, HiBran, and Vitbe (presumably Vitbe Wheatgerm). Appreciation of patient preference appears to be totally forsaken in these inflexible recommendations for breakfast cereals and bread, which thus ignore the possibility of including suitable second best choices in an attempt to encourage dietary compliance. An important opportunity to stimulate the growing interest in nutrition among medical practitioners has been missed. Nutrition educators who hope to be heeded must avoid the traditionally condescending attitude which is scattered throughout this series of articles. ANNE BRUCE

Lynch reported a hereditary non polyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) which is seen in some families with dominant mode of inheritance, also know as Lynch Syndrome type I and II. This form to hereditary colorectal cancer has an early age of onset (Less than 45 years) with predominantly proximal colonic involvement (type I) and can also be associated with extrac...
متن کاملBook Review: "Loving Literature. A Cultural History"
It is widely acknowledged that emotion is deeply embedded in literary criticism. Even when we aspire to scientific analysis and objectivity, we assume that we share a love of literature. Loving Literature is a deep and fascinating exploration of this important assumption. Literary critics and professors of literature are expected not only to know but also to love their work. In the case of prof...
متن کاملHereditary Nonpolyposis Colorectal Cancer (HNPCC)/Lynch Syndrome: Surveillance and Diagnostic strategies
Introduction: Hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC, Lynch syndrome) is an autosomal dominant genetic disease. The disease is caused by a mutation in one of four genes of the DNA mismatch repair system and increases the risk for various cancers, especially the uterine and colon cancers. The prevalence of this disease in the general population is about 1 in 500 and it causes about 2-3...
متن کاملHistory and molecular genetics of Lynch syndrome in family G: a century later.
CONTEXT In 1895, Aldred Scott Warthin, MD, PhD, initiated one of the most thoroughly documented and longest cancer family histories ever recorded. The unusually high incidence and segregation of cancers of the colon, rectum, stomach, and endometrium in Dr Warthin's family G was later followed up by his colleagues, most recently by Henry Lynch, MD. Described today as a Lynch syndrome family, fam...
متن کاملHNPCC (Lynch Syndrome): Differential Diagnosis, Molecular Genetics and Management - a Review
HNPCC (Lynch syndrome) is the most common form of hereditary colorectal cancer (CRC), wherein it accounts for between 2-7 percent of the total CRC burden. When considering the large number of extracolonic cancers integral to the syndrome, namely carcinoma of the endometrium, ovary, stomach, hepatobiliary system, pancreas, small bowel, brain tumors, and upper uroepithelial tract, these estimates...
